Collar Me Pretty & Hiking My Way To A Foodie Paradise!

The other day we (Roxy and I) got the most awesome package from our Bestest (Suzanna & Razzle). I think it’s safe to say that it was a prezzy for Roxy for MY 30th bday. ¬†That bitch is always stealing my thunder. ūüėČ I guess Razzle didn’t want Roxy to feel left out of the spotlight, heaven forbid. Can I just say (again), It is the most awesome hand painted/embossed gorgeous leather collar. Susan’s sister, Nicole, owns the shop – Four Robins – where she custom makes all different kinds of hand crafted leather dog collars! So freshy cute. ¬†They size them perfectly to fit the girth (such an obnoxious word but it was fitting-ish) of your pupster’s neck! We Love Love Loved. Roxy will be rocking her sugar skulls like you wouldn’t believe. Putting the Rox in Roxstar!

On that note, I’m uber excited to take Roxy hiking up Fryman so she can showcase her new collar. ¬†It’s a fantastic & new favorite hiking spot. ¬†I’m pretty sure it’s only new to me – which has had me kicking myself that I’ve spent the 1-2 years stuck in a Runyon rut. Although it’s quick and easy and was fun at first – Runyon isn’t really as ‘amazing’ as it’s cracked up to be. ¬†I say that now – HA! ¬†I suppose It’s partially because I take the boring part, that being said – again – it might just be me. ¬†A few weeks ago my twin (Amy) told me about her awesome hike up Fryman in Studio City. ¬†We went last weekend and BAM! ¬†It had me at beautiful trees, wide looping trail, gorgeous views all around, an intermix of moderate and intermediate levels, the LACK of urine, dust, mobs of annoying people & off leash dogs plowing into me…Runyon is a thing of my past. ¬†HELLO to FRYMAN HIKE! ¬†It rocked. ¬†A nice cherry on top was being spit out into a neighborhood of gorgeous homes on a tree lined street that I didn’t even know existed in LA. ¬†It felt like I was in Northern California again. ¬†Sigh of delight.

Tomorrow morning my memories of last weekend’s hike-a-pades, will soon become a reality again. I have a date hike w/Twin (Amy) and Frank-kay! ¬†YAY! ¬†A gorgeous calorie burn with our pups and hanging with a besty- can’t beat that.

And then, let there be cake…cake ingredients…or any baking/cooking ingredients of the sort. ¬† I’ll finally be hitting SURFAS in Culver City to go check out their packaging supplies so I can package up my brikkle & Fro. ¬†I have a few other specialty items on my list like cheesecloth and coffee extract and from what I hear, I’ll end up with a lot more than what’s on my list if I’m not careful. ¬† Brandy told me that I had to check this place out, ‘divine’ she said. ¬†It’s been hard to get over there – Culver City is so close yet so far away. ¬†So I’m really excited to finally check it out and start the creative packaging ideas flowing for TID BITS: A Choice Morsel; which by the way – has locked on a logo. ¬†Woot woot.

Getting back to Surfas…it’s a hybrid store that caters to restaurants, gourmet foodies, and home chefs. ¬†Bulk spices are ridiculously cheap, and there is also an extensive selection of professional bakeware along with kitchen appliances. Chocolates, cheeses, cured meats… I’ve been told that this is a great place to go to if you are making cupcakes, candies, favors, for weddings, baby showers, or bridal showers. ¬†I wish I would have known that when I was juggling the bridesmaid duty in 5 weddings last year – wah wah. ¬† I’m so excited to go there as they also have a cafe (looks divine) to break and feed our bellies, a test kitchen where they have classes/demonstrations galore and I can’t wait to find all those specialty chocolates and cheeses that are damn near impossible to get anywhere else. ¬†The jackpot will be hit – ¬†you betcha by golly.

The word on the street is that this place is dangerous…for your wallet! ¬†Uh oh. ¬†Go with a list and a friend to help lock it up and regulate – that’s what I am doing. ¬†I plan to hopefully report back with good finds & Adventures in TidBits Shenanigans. ¬†Until then, enjoy your weekend – I know I will be ūüôā


A TID BIT of FIT BITS

Work it!

I have a little bit of an obsession (no it’s not just Fro Yo) it’s with all things food and exercise which has me constantly searching out and successfully retaining random Tid Bits of information. ¬†There’s only so much I can blab to my friends and family about before they want to sock me. Except for Amy-my Twin, but that’s because she’s just like me, however, much taller and not as crazy ūüėČ ¬†Whom, btw, will soon be co-blogging food and fitness Fit Bits on TidBits – so stay tuned. So since my friends and family are constantly telling me to quit my jibber jabber (yes, that was a Mr.T reference) and because I’m single and ready to mingle, I’m basically left with my dog or my blog. ¬†And let’s face it, my dog pretends to care but I can sense she doesn’t want to hear it – plus, I’m not one of those dog owners;). And since my pup has been straddling the fluffier side of the fence these days, I’m sure she doesn’t care about my stinkin’ FIT BITS

That being said, here’s some random fun TidBits that I’m throwing out into the blogosphere – catch it if you can.
#1. So you want to get lose a few lbs? ¬†It’s hard to know how much you need to cut out or make sure to eat in order to drop it like it’s hot. ¬† I’m a firm believer in sticking to a healthy lifestyle as a way of life instead of dieting just to lose weight for weight sake. ¬†However, here is a basic formula that puts you in the ‘area’ of how many calories to eat to help get you losin. Remember, it varies by amount of exercise and each persons body type.
FIT BIT: Your weight x 18 – 500 = about how many calories you need to loose a pound a week – if exercising.
#2.  Need to stay on track with eating and exercise?  Want motivation and tips? Need a Fit tool that does it all for you? Done and Done!

FIT BIT: My absolute favorite app – hook line and sinker and perhaps has me more obsessed than Facebook is MYFITNESSPAL (also – myfitnesspal.com). ¬†It helps me keep track of my calories/fat/carbs/protein, exercise, recipes and allows you to talk to network/friend other people on the site so you can share tips and motivation. Nothing’s more motivating then seeing a post that your bff ¬†did 60 min of awesome cardio while you slept in – makes you want to get out of bed and one up that biatch ūüėČ Some friendly competition never hurt anyone.¬†¬†It’s absolutely my favorite thing – I think I’m more disciplined with Myfitnesspal than I am with balancing my checkbook. ¬†Knowing you can look up any food and see the nutrition info and track what you’ve eaten, input ingredients of a recipe and have it tell you the serving calories – all is very empowering and allows you to control what you put in your mouth. ¬† ¬†Needless to say, I’ve gotten a ton of friends & co-workers (and guys) addicted to it as well. ¬†Check out this great tool.
#3. Want to rev up your metabolism and lose weight? ¬†DON’T SKIP BREAKY!! ¬†You will hear it time and time and time again – EAT BREAKFAST. ¬†It’s true. ¬†I didn’t start to finally lose weight until I started eating breakfast. ¬†Trust, I used to think it was awesome that I could hold out until 3pm to eat because I wasn’t hungry – until I realized it basically shuts down your metabolism – hindering you from losing weight!
FIT BIT: Regularly skipping breakfast increases the risk of obesity by 450%.  Yeah, how about them apples!
#4. Lifting Weights is KEY to losing weight – period. ¬†No you will not look like the incredible hulk – well, if your lifting heavy amounts you might. ¬†I’m prone to looking like the mini hulk (seriously) so I just make sure to keep it at 5-8lbs and do a lot of reps. ¬†I was doing tons of cardio and the weight wasn’t coming off very fast – a turtle was burning more lbs then me. I thought lifting weights would make me thicker and weigh more. But when I noticed all the skinny bitches at the gym were, I took note. ¬†Finally, I started eating breakfast and lifting combined with cardio and eating healthy. ¬†The pounds started melting off.
FIT BIT: Weight training is an ultimate fat fighter.  Research shows a single weight training session can spike your calorie burn for up to 39 hours after you lift.  The more muscle you have, the better your body uses nutrients you consume and less likely to store food as fat.
#5. Eating your veggies doesn’t just make you taller (trust me I have first hand experience – all lies;)) However, here’s a fun FIT BIT: Did you know that carrots can clear up breakouts? Kinda cool huh.
Just don’t over do it or you run the risk of looking like an umpa loompa and they are also a veggie that’s high in sugar – too much and your calories will sky rocket.
#6. Wanting it isn’t enough. FIT BIT: You gotta do the work to lose the weight. ¬†When you retrain your brain and have a different mindset – you’ll kick yourself when you realize it’s a lot easier than you thought to lose the weight. ¬†All those times when you ask – how did you do it? What’s your secret? ¬†There is none. ¬†It really is basic math of what you put in your mouth and what you exert. ¬†Put good things into your body and keep moving = Weightloss. ¬†I struggled with that mindset as I did with the weight itself my whole life – be that 10lbs or the freshman 40 (they lied when they said it was only 30). ¬†My dad would always say – “you gotta wanna and you don’t want it bad enough!” I wanted to smack him every time he said that – oh how I did! I wanted to lose the weight more than anything. ¬†Then It clicked while watching Bob Greene on Oprah. ¬†He said, you can want it all you want – but you HAVE TO BE WILLING TO DO WHAT IT TAKES to lose the weight. ¬†That was my Ah Ha moment!
I can proudly say I’ve lost about 55lbs since 2004/2005 – it took over a year to really get a good chunk of it off – but officially 2007 was my golden year of getting to where I wanted. ¬†I’ve kept it off for over 4 years and I live a healthy lifestyle full of good indulgences (okay, maybe my froyo addiction has gotten out of hand) but I will now always remain FIT 4 LIFE! Can I getta SCOOP…

Baby take a ride in my coupe…you make me want to FRO YO, FRO YO, FRO YO!

Perhaps I’m bringing addiction to a whole new level. Perhaps, but I’m okay with that. If Carbo-lite ¬†8 cals/oz Fro Yo deliciousness makes me happy, then so be it! There could be a lot worse things.

I think a huge part of my addiction is my fro yo dealer, Carmelita. She’s keeps me coming back – that and the fact that she always let’s me choose what new flavors she switches up and then there’s the awesome, I mean awesome tub of fro yo for such low calories (unlike most of the Frozen Yogurt Chains). It’s also a good feeling to know the owners of our local small businesses¬†bond with their customers and actually¬†care about them. Carmelita has turned into such a great friend – she knows when I’m having a bad day, gives me guy advice (which is – don’t date men in west hollywood ;)), asks how my day was and actually wants to hear the answer, lets me taste every flavor over and over again and most of all – doesn’t judge my Fro Yo addiction! ¬†If you’re feeling the lick of deliciousness and want a friendly face – go visit Carmelita at Beverly Frozen Yogurt in shopping center on corner of Beverly & Crescent Heights.

Here’s my *BIT¬†TIP – it’s good to have a BIT of soft serve at the shop, but I think it’s better & cheaper (get biggest size) and take it home and refreeze it. ¬†Take it out about 5-10 before you are gonna eat or scoop out a few TidBits – it’s perfect. ¬†Not too soft, a little icy, flavorful – PERFECTION. ¬†I think refreezing taste better, eat slower and doesn’t hurt your tum tum. ¬†I took it to the last girls night gathering – OMG – it was like crows attacking, caw caw caw!

Lazy Bakin’

My Saturday began at the wee hour of 6:45am when a furry lil chocolate terrierpoo named Henry thought it would be funny to pounce on my face. ¬†I’m watching my friends fluffy lil pupsters and apparently, they don’t appreciate the art of sleeping in like my dog Roxy does. ¬†Roxy had a look on her face like, Bi&%! don’t bother me! Needless to say, I was up and running at mock speed the rest of the day. After a busy day of pups, vet, groomers, ¬†lunch at The Corner Cafe (where everyone knows our name) with my besty, mean clean apartment machine shenanigans, grocery shopping and a Fro Yo run (had to get er done) I’m officially pooped!! ¬†Running on no food since lunch and too tired to cook – what does one do? ¬†Whip out my lazy bake shenanigans!

Tid Bits…and Pieces

These days, it seems like everyone is looking for the cliff notes to even the most basic breakdowns. ¬†Or maybe it makes me feel better to believe that is the case. ¬†Regardless, new information is constantly changing, in and out, hot and cold, yes and then no…you get the picture. ¬†I can barely get through a magazine fast enough before the info I’m reading is already old news on a blog somewhere. ¬†All that being said, I like it short-sweet-and-to-the-point! ¬†I retain information better that way. ¬†Reading through my Dad’s, Men’s Health Magazine – I jotted down some fun random Tid-bits that apparently I thought were worth repeating. I guess you could call it, the cliff notes on fun ‘shawna’ facts.

I actually think Men’s Health Magazine is one of the Best magazine for ladies – You get all the tips, advise and priceless information that just might help in understanding this insane creature we love to hate called ‘man.’ And let’s not forget to mention that there are really hot gorgeous men throughout AND guys always seem to have the best fit tips and exercises.

Take a gander and a mental note – you’ll have random fun tid-bits to talk about this weekend instead of the usual “how bout them apples?…I mean Dodgers!” :

Food For Thought:

  • For all you beer drinkers that want healthy options…really? ¬†Well in case you are one of them, heres some knowledge that will help quench your thirst…If you want a healthy beer option, stick to a STOUT. ¬†Guinness is a great option – Rich taste and helps reduce blood clots and heart attacks. ¬†What’s not to love, bigger bang for your buck.
  • Did you know that once you hit the point of being thirsty, you’re already dehydrated? ¬†Which means that once you are dehydrated, the amount of water in the body has already dropped below what’s needed for normal body function. ¬†So make sure to grab your Water Bobble and suck it down! ¬†My personal trick – Try adding part of an EmergenC vitamin pack for ¬†a light great taste that will give you energy, ward off the flu and help you drink up faster!
  • Unnecessary weight gain isn’t about eating too much food, it’s about eating too much food that’s NOT food.
  • Wednesday is the best day to shop for groceries. ¬†Besides the fact that running into Trader Joe’s on a Sunday or Monday evening will make you want to cause bodily harm – Wednesdays can help save your wallet and your insanity. ¬†Most promotions start on Wednesdays, less people do their shopping mid week which results in more to choose from and faster in/out . ¬†There’s also an interesting study that showed people using a credit/debit card spend 70% more on junk food.
  • Try eating a meal in silence. ¬†People eat more when distracted and the quality in taste goes down. A food quality study showed diners who ate in noisy settings reported that the food TASTED less appealing. Hmmm…
  • If you really think about this, it totally makes sense and works: Planning responses to hunger help you stick to your diet. (ie. ¬†If I get hungry in 5 minutes, I’ll have gum. ¬†If I get hungry in 15 minutes, I’ll eat some carrots)

Fun Facts:

  • Put those phones down texty mctextersons! Apparently, frequent texters are more likely to be lonely and more anxious – according to a recent study.
  • 33% of married women think their pets are better listeners than husbands. ¬†Is this why I’m still single? ¬†Is it because I can picture a lifetime with my dog Roxy and can be somewhat okay with that? ¬†Oh geez. ¬†Not only Fro Yo Girl but I’ll add Dog Lady to my resume ūüėČ

Until my next Friday night in (that I love and often prefer over a night on the town) of stuffing my face with a big bowl of air popped popcorn, Roxy at my side, watching David Tutera’s ‘My Fair Wedding’ and Say Yes to the Dress and then stuffing my face again with my 8cal/oz AHH MAY Zing FRO YO, all while sifting through a stack of magazines collecting random tid-bits for you – I bid adieu!


Shake It Up, Bake It Up…Then…Devour!

Since my obsession for Fro Yo still holds strong and as I finish off the last of my freezer stash of peanut butter flavored fro yo goodness, I start to think that maybe I should look into some substitutes to keep my taste buds guessing. ¬†Or perhaps, to hold them over until I make another trip to my Fro Yo Dealer, Carmelita. ¬†Mmmm, maybe she has a pumpkin flavor ready for me soon? ¬†Until I can get over there, I’m feeling like making some homemade recipes. ¬†Funny, because for some reason I’m getting up close and personal with my inner susie homemaker. ¬†Am I nesting because it’s fall? ¬†Regardless, I can’t get enough. ¬†I screen grab recipes like it’s my job with the intention to have a bake off and then give up when I’m missing more than one ingredient.

However, while searching through some of my favorite sites, I came across some easy healthy frozen treats on FitSugar that sound super delish!  I must try and I must share.

For a Fall Time Frozen treat Рtry this Pumpkin Spice Smoothie from Eating Bird Food. I also now love this blog and I am so excited to try out more of her healthy fun recipes.  Check it out.

Ingredients

1/2 cup pumpkin (canned or freshly cooked)
1/2 frozen banana
3/4 cup almond milk
1/2 scoop (or approx. 2 T) vanilla protein powder
1 tsp cinnamon
1/2 tsp pumpkin pie spice
pinch of ground ginger

Directions

  • Put all ingredients in the blender and blend until smooth. Pour into a glass and enjoy!

Aprox: 165 Cals |  3 g Fat | 10 g Protein | 28 g Carbs

As much as I am a sucker for a frozen treat, I want a treat that doubles as a healthy vitamin packed tasty pick me up that is low in calories.  I stumbled across this recipe on FitSugar:  Peachy Green Smoothie and thought it would be perfect to try out this weekend for an AM jump start.

Ingredients

6 peaches (without the seed; frozen is OK)
2 handfuls of spinach leaves
2 cups water

Directions
Blend all the ingredients together until well mixed.

The recipe yields one quart, which is perfect for four full 16-ounce servings. With each sip, you’re getting a dose of fiber, niacin, potassium, folate, and manganese. The smoothie is also rich in vitamins E, A, C, and K, which will add an extra boost to the immune system. And, if you need to add some more flavor to the drink, try subbing a banana for two of the peaches.

Now for the BAKE OFF! ¬†I finished making my first batch of my mom’s banana bread over the weekend. ¬†Success! ¬†Amazing! ¬†Totally guilty but worth every tasty calorie. ¬†The office gobbled it up and so did my neighbors which were my guinea pigs. ¬†Truth, I had to borrow sour cream and sub the walnuts for candied pecans because it was all my neighbor had. ¬†I’m still getting used to this baking thing and I have a habit of getting started before I realize I am missing ingredients. ¬†My next indulgence will be somewhat of a healthy one and perfect for the on going theme, Fall. ¬†I got this fun baked doughnut recipe off of¬†FitSugar – posted by CookingErin.

Baked Apple Cider Donuts
original recipeBaked Apple Cider Donuts (makes 1 dozen regular size) ‚ÄĒ¬†inspired by Health magazine

Ingredients

1 1/2 cups all purpose flour mixed with 1/2 cup whole wheat flour (alternatively you could use 2 cups all purpose flour)
1 1/2 tsp baking powder
1/2 tsp salt
2 tsp ground cinnamon
1/4 tsp ground nutmeg
1/2 cup brown sugar
1 large egg, beaten
1/2 cup unsweetened plain applesauce
1/3 cup low fat buttermilk
1/3 cup apple cider
1/8 cup honey mixed with 1/8 cup maple syrup (alternatively you could use 1/4 cup honey only or just 1/4 cup maple syrup only instead of a maple syrup/honey combo)
1 tbs melted butter
extra sugar for coating the pan

Directions

Prepare your doughnut pan by spraying with cooking spray and sprinkling sugar into each doughnut cavity ‚ÄĒ shake to coat. Preheat your oven to 425 degrees.

Combine the first five ingredients in a small bowl, stir to combine.  Combine the egg through butter in a large bowl, whisk together. Slowly add the flour mixture to the wet ingredients and mix until the batter just comes together.

Bake for 8-10 minutes or until the donuts spring back when touched and are golden brown on the bottom. Remove from the pan and set aside to cool . . . . or take a bite of one while it’s still scorching hot like I did.

 

This undertaking could be so bad it’s good. ¬†I’ll see if my neighbor and taste tester extraordinaire is up for taking incriminating baking photos that could hinder my baking rep! ¬†Let’s be honest, if anything I attempt to bake (using all my low cal/healthy substitutions) actually comes out edible, I’ve succeeded! ¬† ¬†I often find myself calling on healthy low cal cook/baker/friend, Nancy Fox, of Skinnykitchen. Nancy has been so helpful emailing me back with tips and ways to troubleshoot around recipes. ¬†She knows every trick in the book.

Up on Skinny Kitchen there is this recipe up that looks divine and is just waiting to be made for that perfect rainy fall day, which should be coming up this weekend! WHAT’S EATING YOU? (Breakfast Edition)

GET IN MY BELLY…

I don’t know What’s Eating You, but I can definitely tell you what I’m eating. I like to call it EASY E! (aka. Easy Eats) My¬†Favorite easy, healthy and fresh for your body meals/snacks/etc. ¬† All low cal! Easy prep! And more importantly, EASY TO EAT! The way I like it since I’m a snack attacker. ¬†I am constantly fueling my body by eating. ¬†I eat all day long. ¬†Usually, every 1.5-2 hours. My dad said to me the other day “Gosh you eat a lot for someone that stays thin.” ¬†It’s my secret (or no secret at all) to keeping the weight off.

The key: eat clean, natural, good for you foods that are light, healthy and fresh. ¬†If you constantly fuel your body all day long with the right food, your metabolism will soar through the roof. In turn, you will burn calories all day – even when you’re not moving. ¬†For me, it’s about preparing ahead of time easy-grab meals/snacks that don’t take much effort and that I can take quick on the go. ¬†Below are some of my personal favorite go-to meals/snacks that do my morning just right.

Morning tip: Try to eat just a tiny something within 30 minutes of waking, even if it’s a slice of fruit or a few bites of fiber cereal. ¬†Within an hour or so, make sure to eat a more filling and wholesome breakfast. Warning, even after a fuller breakfast, be prepared to be hungry again about 1.5 hours after eating. ¬†That’s okay – go snack before lunch.

Here’s what I’ve been chowing down on this week.

BREAKFAST:

1.) Figs!!! ¬†Figs are back for fall and I’m working them in my meals when I can.

Pretty In Fig Fruit Medley Shenanigans:

1 mini apple (cubed), 1/2 c of fresh watermelon (cubed), 1/4 c of Dannon Light & Fit Fat Free Vanilla yogurt, sprinkle of Trader Joe’s High Fiber Cereal and lots of cinnamon. ¬†(Roughly 150 cals)

2.) Fruit, fiber & cheese please – I can’t quit you Breakfast!

The Usual:

1/4 c Trader Joe’s High Fiber Cereal, 1/4 c of Fat Free cottage cheese, 1 piece of fruit sliced & diced.

The Usual – ALT (I like to call it – “The Usual”on a Vacation in Mexico):

1/4 c of Fat Free cottage cheese, Few sprinkles of Trader Joe’s High Fiber Cereal, 1 small roma tomato (sliced), 1 persian cucumber (sliced), 1-2 spoonfuls of fresh pico de gallo, cinnamon (optional)

3.) Egg Whites, Egg Whites, Egg Whites!!

SO FLUFFY AND CLEAN CLEAN!

You can have so much fun with egg whites and it’s such a low cal, protein blaster, filling dish. For less than 150 calories – you could have about 1 cup of an egg white scramble (no butter/oil – use the spray) and mix in all the goodies: mushrooms, bell pepper, onion, etc. ¬†I like to top it with pico de gallo and then pair it with a piece of fruit for an awesome start to my morning!

4.) Fresh & Easy just the way I like it.

GET ER DONE:  Slices of cucumber, tomato, cottage cheese and pico de gallo.  Seasoning to taste.  Love it with my coffee and some fruit on the side.

5.) STARBIES!!!! Can’t forget a good cup of joe shooting through my veins to get my day going. ¬†I have some guilty pleasures and this is one I will not give up, as of now.

GRANDE AMERICANO w/2 pumps of sugar free vanilla and a tiny splash of Hot soy.

To sum it up – make sure to eat breakfast. ¬†I prided myself in being able to go until 3pm without eating – it’s all BS. ¬†I used to also be 50+ lbs heavier when I did that. ¬†It’s not a diet, it’s not about starving. ¬†It’s about eating healthy good for you foods – with a little guilty pleasure thrown in every once in awhile ūüėČ

I think my next baking adventure I’m going to try making these Baked Apple Cider Doughnuts. ¬†Healthy, but tasty! Me likes. ¬†I found this awesome recipe posted on Fit Sugar. ¬†Don’t they look good? ¬†I’ll keep you posted how they come out.
